All things are possible to those who believe… You know we have read that and heard that in churches and from pulpits but there was a man who took this to the extreme. There was a battle I want to review back in history and we can read about it in the old testament. Here is a snippet of the scripture..
8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim 9 with Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar, four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into them, and the rest fled to the hill country. 11 So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. 12 They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way.
13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people.
I wanted to point out that what an amazing victory this was for Abram. I mean he took 318 of his men and defeated 5 kings and that includes their armies. That does sound like amazing odds in favor of the five kings but there was something they had, a secret weapon, that these Kings were not expecting.
Like the battle of Thermopylae, the Spartans were trained men who were motivated to save their land and fight against the terrorist from Persia. They stood their ground and gave their best effort against insurmountable odds and even to this day we view these men as men of honor and valor. Although they were defeated we look to them as the Mighty Spartans and because of that they went down in history.
The first Spartans, although they were not from Sparta, came from the Holy Land. Abram led these men into insurmountable odds as well and they result was very different. The secret weapon they held was Almighty God was on their side. They had faith in the creator, the one true God. He led them, sustained them, and strengthened them so that they could overcome the five Kings coming against their land. This clear win shows us there is only one side in a fight. The winner is always the one who has Faith In God. Even with Jesus and the Cross, the victory was won the day He was raised from the dead.
